Due to economic circumstances, the Hurd Scholarship will not be awarded in 2009 in order to rebuild the endowment.

Dorothy
Crippen Hurd Scholars
Each spring, the Waco ISD Education Foundation selects one or more Waco High School seniors as Dorothy
Crippen Hurd Scholars. The prestigious title recognizes outstanding academic achievement and leadership of Waco
High graduates.
SCHOLARSHIP
AWARD
A Hurd Scholarship of $6,000 to $10,000 will be awarded to one graduating
student from Waco High School each year. The student must have attended
Waco High School in the 10th, 11th, and 12th grades. The award will
be given over a four-year period. The student must be enrolled in
a four-year accredited university. If required GPA is maintained,
the awarded funds will be given directly to the university (one-eighth
per semester) each of the four years.
CRITERIA
-Top 5 % of graduating class
-Demonstrate leadership during high school
-Participate as a community volunteer during the high school years.
-Obtain a SAT score of 1800 or an ACT score of 27
-Complete a balanced college preparatory program in Advanced Academics
Studies
-Only Waco High Seniors may apply
APPLICATION
The application form includes a personal essay (1-2 pages) which
demonstrates candidate's personal and academic qualifications, concept
of leadership and philosophy of service. A resume is also required. Applications for this scholarship
award will be accepted in January or February of each year.
SELECTION
A selection committee will be formed by the WISD Education Foundation Executive Committee. Included on the
committee will be the Waco High School Principal, Waco High School Counselor, and a community representative.
The winner(s) will be announced in May.
Scholars are engraved on a plaque placed at Waco High.
CONTINUATION
The student must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.2 each semester to qualify for grant continuation. The grant will
be discontinued if the GPA has not been maintained for a semester, but is available again in subsequent semesters in
which a 3.2 GPA is reattained.
