$104,267.29 awarded to WISD!

The Waco ISD Education Foundation's "SurPrize Patrol" has once again produced hundreds of smiles throughout the district by awarding more than $104-thousand in grants. The decisions were tough, but 28 grants were awarded to 21 campuses. The Foundation is pleased to have so many fantastic teachers in Waco ISD with creative ideas about how to do more in the classroom. Through their motivation and the Foundation's funding, we are truly Raising the Power of Education in Waco!

For a more complete balanced physical education program promoting lifelong personal fitness, weight-lifting will teach students to integrate biological and physiological principals with other curriculums.

Can you reach the stars from a pyramid? - $1568.09

Students will "travel" to Egypt, build pyramids, decipher the Egyptian hieroglyphics, learn the Egyptian number system, design their own Pharoah necklace and discover old Egyptian artifacts.

Brazos Middle
Tuning with Technology - $2590.00

Electronic tuners with microphone clips will assist all band students in improving their intonation skills.

Crestview Elementary
Science Alliance - $1432.50
Fifth grade students will prepare science lessons and teach the lesson to their first grade science buddy through a peer mentoring, hands-on, minds-on, center based lesson/activity.

Let's Play Guitar - $5017.35

Classical guitars will be taught with assistance from projector technology in the music classroom.

G.L. Wiley Middle
Science Academy - $5200.00

The Science Academy will focus on the 8 national standards in science as well as the integration of problem solving and mathematics skills.

The Connected Classroom - $7500.00

Five desktop computers allow students arranged in small groups to work cooperatively with access to a computer throughout a class period. Hurd Memorial Grant

Learning Through the Power of Play - $6938.50

This project will include an outdoor play space consisting of tricycles, a bike track and outdoor musical equipment. It will accommodate children with physical disabilities without separating them from their peers.

Reading Around the World - $1500.00

A reading day will expose students to different cultures through reading, and in return, have a momentum of the day to take home.

Clicking to Success with e-Instruction - $4995.00

A classroom performance system incorporates wireless infared response pads into the hands of every student.

Lake Air Journalism - $1800.00

Journalism students are accountable for the creating, modifying, marketing, distributing and meeting the production deadlines of constructing a yearbook, as well as a monthly newsletter.

One Minute Readers - $3050.00

The One Minute Readers include books, audio CDs and record sheets specifically designed to give students a visual representation of growth in fluency.

Meadowbrook Elementary
Classroom on Wheels - $2282.40

"Classroom on Wheels" is a cross-curricular discovery project centered around fieldtrips for 4th and 5th grade students, giving them a visual representation of TAKS objectives.

Mountainview Elementary
Mustang Ambassadors - $1897.00

Etiquette curriculum for second through fifth grade Student Council representatives will build lifelong leaders with good communication skills and excellent character.

A very unique basketball performance training program will give students confidence and exercise.

The use of pedometers encourages students to get more exercise, while engaging their higher thinking skills to take a virtual trip across the country.

An enhanced physical education program will include afterschool and weekend activities to benefit the community

STARS Academy
Classroom Take Out - $2900.00

Sponsored by MCYC & HOT Workforce: NovaNet online high school curriculum will be available on two laptops that students can use at home to keep working on identified high school courses on their graduation plan while they recuperate.

Authors: Who Are These People? - $1405.30

Athens students will become familiar with authors and contemporary literature through audiovisual materials.

Teachers, community members, and parent and student volunteers help students explore how math is used in different careers through engaging activities and games in a carnival-type setting.

Bringing Back the News - $5648.00

Funds allow the rebirth of the award-winning Trojan Times newspaper, to be published once each six weeks.

Bienvenido to English - $7500.00

The addition of the Sleek software, Advance Reader software and other ESL software will serve all students in their ELA and reading classes. Hurd Memorial Grant

Waco High
"Poetry Alive!" at Waco High! - $2050.00

Students will enjoy live poetry performances, and select students will have the opportunity to work with professional performers in a workshop setting. Molly Maloy Memorial Grant

WISD Fine Arts
Pursuit of Perfect Harmony- $2025.00

WISD's choral teaching staff will have the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to study with the renowned Dr. Anton Armstrong at the Baylor Summer Choral School.

West Avenue Elementary
Tidal Waves Steel Drum Band - $6800.00

This grant project will provide steel drums for the performance group and other students to learn music, build confidence and study another culture through a three-year program.

West Avenue Elementary
Wild West Ave. Calculator Cowboys - $3609.64

Graphing calculators (TI-83 plus) will afford our GT students a unique resource designed to help students in mastering pre-algebra and Algebra I.
